Recycle Pilot Scheme

Did you know: As much as 80% of the things we throw away could be recycled?

With environmental issues becoming ever more important, it’s essential that we all do more.

That’s why we’re running a recycling pilot scheme to increase our recycling in Rossendale and we need your support.

If you live in any of the following areas, you’ve been chosen to take part in our pilot scheme to see if we can increase our recycling rates.

  • Thorburn Drive, Whitworth
  • Orama Avenue (Estate) Whitworth (including Thor Drive and Spinners Drive)
  • Townsend Street Waterfoot (including offshoots Millar Barn Lane, Ashworth Street, Stone Street, Ivy Street, Bacup Road, Lench Street)
  • Queensway and Woodside, New Church

A simple and easy way to help make a real difference to our borough is by recycling more of our rubbish.

British households create over 26m tonnes of waste each year, the weight of around 260 large cruise ships!

This means that the average person in the UK throws away around 400kg of rubbish each year – 7 times their body weight.

Of the 26m tonnes of waste produced in the UK, 12m tonnes are recycled, and 14m tonnes are sent to landfill sites. This gives us an average recycling rate of just 45%.

BUT... In Rossendale that figure is much lower at 30% and we want to change that.

We know that each household has a lot of bins, and it can be confusing knowing what can and can’t be recycled and which bin to put it in – so you just chuck it in the general waste bin. But we’re here to make it easier than ever to recycle!

We will be providing you with loads of information to help you choose the right bin for every item you chuck.

Keep your eyes open for scannable QR codes that will take you to info pages, social media posts, videos, animations, quizzes and more.

We’ll teach you how to CHECK BEFORE YOU CHUCK to make sure your rubbish is going in the right bin, first time, every time.
