As Rossendale commemorates 50 years since its formation following the 1974 local government reforms in England, Rossendale Borough Council is inviting residents to join in a celebration of the borough's rich history.
The Local Government Act 1972, which came into effect on 1 April 1974, saw the reorganisation and reform of local government in England and Wales. Rural District Councils, Urban District Councils and Municipal Boroughs were abolished and merged to form a smaller number of larger District Councils, which included Rossendale Borough Council.
The new borough was created from four former districts and part of a fifth, which were abolished at the same time. These were Bacup, Haslingden, Whitworth, Rawtenstall and parts of Ramsbottom.
The formation of the borough of Rossendale marked a significant milestone in the area’s history, and to mark this occasion, the council is planning a series of activities and initiatives designed to celebrate the borough's journey over the past five decades.
Among the planned activities is a call for residents to contribute photographs, reminiscences, and stories from the last 50 years. The council is particularly interested in images capturing the essence of the borough's landmarks, events, and everyday life. Suggestions for photo submissions include recognisable buildings and landmarks over the years such as The Halo, Ski Rossendale, Marl Pits Leisure Centre, as well as snapshots of community gatherings, celebrations, and everyday scenes.
A council spokesperson said: "We're inviting residents to take a trip down memory lane and share their personal stories and photos of Rossendale over the past 50 years."
"There have undoubtably been quite a few changes in the last 50 year and not just in the look of the borough but also in fashion, cars, hairstyles, so we’d love to see some of those pictures as well. We’re looking forward to showcasing the rich variety of our borough's history."
In addition to photo submissions, the council will be engaging residents through interactive polls, quizzes, and digital initiatives. Residents will have the opportunity to contribute to a digital time capsule, where photos, videos, and messages commemorating the borough's milestone anniversary will be curated and made accessible online for future generations.
"We want to create a digital archive that reflects the diversity and vitality of Rossendale. By capturing the memories and experiences of residents across different generations, we hope to create a lasting legacy that celebrates our shared heritage and inspires future generations."
Residents interested in participating in the celebration are encouraged to submit their contributions to media@rossendalebc.gov.uk or via the council’s social media pages.
Please note that by submitting content, participants agree to its potential use in external communications, including social media, press releases, council websites, and printed literature.
