Rossendale Borough Council announces new plans to upgrade the wheeled sports facility at Victoria Park.

Rossendale Borough Council (RBC) have unveiled plans for a major upgrade to the wheeled sports facility at Victoria Park. The plans come from feedback received during the Masterplan consultation process, which highlighted the need to replace the outdated equipment with a modern facility.

The ambitious transformation will see the creation of a state-of-the-art concrete structure designed to cater to wheeled sports enthusiasts of all ages, disciplines, and abilities. The project aims to revitalise the park and provide a first-class facility for the community.

The improvements will be funded through a combination of sources, including the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSP) and RBC funding.

The Council have worked in partnership with Proffitts - Investing in Communities on the project and plans have been based on ideas generated in the Masterplan consultation process.

Cllr Adrian Lythgoe, Portfolio Holder for Communities and a Haslingden resident, has been a strong advocate for the project. He expressed his enthusiasm, stating: "This is a fantastic opportunity to revitalise a much-loved community space and provide a great facility for everyone, from beginners to experienced riders.

“The feedback from our youth consultations with Haslingden High School and Rawtenstall Youth Zone has been invaluable in shaping the design, ensuring it meets the needs of our young people."

The project is expected to reach its final stages by late 2024, with construction commencing once all funding is secured. The Council is also encouraging residents, schools, and community groups to stay engaged with the project as it progresses. Further updates will be provided as funding is confirmed and work begins.

The improvements to Victoria Park are reflective of a wider trend seen across the borough, where significant investments have been made to enhance public spaces. Four of Rossendale’s main parks now have Masterplans in place, Victoria, Whittaker, Stubbylee and Edgeside, securing thousands of pounds in funding over recent years for critical improvements. These developments align with two of the council’s key priorities: fostering healthy, proud communities and ensuring a high quality environment.

Councillor Lythgoe added: “By revitalising our parks, we are creating safe, welcoming spaces for all residents to enjoy, while contributing to the overall well-being of our community.”
