Eco-friendly garden showcased at RHS Tatton Flower show now a permanent feature in local park
Rossendale Borough Council has partnered with the North West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee and the Friends of Whitaker Park Community Group to relocate the award-winning ‘Unpave the Way’ garden to Whitaker Park in Rawtenstall.
The eco-garden was officially launched on Saturday, October 5 where residents could access practical tips on how to create their own sustainable garden. Live entertainment was provided by the RAMshackle Wailers Choir and the ‘Unpave the Way’ team were on hand to answer any questions about the garden’s unique drainage system.
Designed by RHS award-winning Leon Davis in collaboration with the Environment Agency, United Utilities, and Lancashire County Council, the eco-system incorporates key elements of sustainable drainage systems to combat flooding and improve environmental resilience, whilst maintaining an enhanced urban aesthetic.
‘Unpave the Way’ seeks to encourage homeowners to adopt permeable driveways, incorporate sustainable drainage solutions, harvest and store rainwater for reuse, and select climate-resilient plants for their front gardens, all in support of climate change.
Originally featured at the RHS Tatton Flower Show in July, where it was recognised by the BBC Gardener’s World, BBC Northwest Tonight, and Radio Alty’s The Earth Show, the gifted garden has now been redesigned to fit seamlessly into Whitaker Park, serving as both a relaxing space for visitors and an educational tool for sustainable living and flood management.
Councillor Liz McInnes highlights the project’s success: “We are thrilled to welcome the ‘Unpave the Way’ Garden to Whitaker Park. This beautiful and sustainable garden is a testament to what can be achieved when communities and partners work together to tackle issues impacting our local environment. By incorporating innovative solutions like sustainable drainage systems, the garden not only enhances our park but also serves as an inspiring tool for residents and future generations.
“We are proud to be part of a project that demonstrates how we can all contribute towards a cleaner, greener Rossendale."
Following the official launch, a series of garden workshops will be held by Rossendale Borough Council, along with community partners and the Environment Agency, to provide hands-on learning about drainage systems, flood risk management, and eco-friendly gardening practices.
