Heritage Day

Catch-up on everything the Mayor has been up to in October

Thursday, October 3rd, 2024 - Civics Greater Manchester Annual Heritage Transport Day

What an incredible day celebrating Greater Manchester’s transport heritage! Alongside other mayors from the region, I had the privilege of visiting the Museum of Transport in Cheetham, which holds a treasure trove of stories from our city’s past. We traveled on a vintage bus to the Salford Museum, and then capped off the day with a lovely lunch on the East Lancashire Railway.

Saturday, October 5th, 2024 - Opening of "Unpave the Way Gardens" – Civic Pride Rossendale

It was a pleasure to officially open the "Unpave the Way Gardens" in Whitaker Park, designed by the award-winning Leon Davis. This beautiful garden, transferred from the RHS Tatton, is a wonderful addition to our community, emphasising sustainability and the beauty of native plants. Joining me was Deputy Mayor, Cllr Michelle Smith, and we both enjoyed seeing this garden space transformed into a haven for local residents. Thank you to everyone who worked bringing the garden to life in Rossendale!

Sunday, October 6th, 2024 - Mayor’s Civic Sunday Harvest Service

This year’s Civic Sunday Harvest Service at St. Mary’s Church in Rawtenstall was a meaningful gathering. Led by Rev. Samuel Hameem and Rev. Derek Allen, it was a time for reflection, gratitude, and giving. We heard beautiful readings from Deputy Lieutenant Louise Cooper and my own grandson, Rudy Jackson, whose participation made the event even more special to me personally. I want to thank everyone who donated non-perishable items, which we later distributed to local food banks—these generous contributions make a real difference for families in need and is a great example of the fantastic community spirit we have in Rossendale.

Wednesday, October 9th, 2024 - Rossendale Rubicon Birthday Party

Celebrating Rubicon’s birthday at Acre Mill Baptist Church with the Deputy Mayor Michelle Smith was another highlight of my October. It was inspiring to join the volunteers and service users who make Rubicon such a special organisation. We enjoyed a delicious spread, uplifting music, and a beautiful performance by singer Francesca. Rossendale Rubicon’s dedication to supporting our community is truly commendable, and I’m grateful for the work they do.

Saturday, October 19th, 2024 - Lantern Parade in Stacksteads Riverside Park

The Lantern Parade, organised by Stacksteads Countryside Park Group, was a magical evening. Residents had made stunning lanterns, which we proudly paraded around Stacksteads Riverside Park. It was marvelous to see everyone out proudly displaying their creative efforts and it was such lovely family atmosphere. Afterward, we gathered at Toll Bar Business Park for refreshments. Thank you to everyone who participated, especially Cllr Danielle Ashworth for joining me as a guest.

Monday, October 28th, 2024 - Whitehorse Project Charity Fundraising Meal

I had the pleasure of supporting the Whitehorse Project at a fundraising meal hosted by The Swan Indian Restaurant. Along with my guest, Cllr Danielle Ashworth, we enjoyed an evening of wonderful food. The Whitehorse Project plays an invaluable role in guiding young people aged 11 to 18 toward brighter futures, helping them engage with their communities and grow in confidence. It was an honor to support them, and I am grateful to everyone who donated to this cause

Wednesday, October 30th, 2024 - Water Primary School Pumpkin Competition

I wrapped up the month with a festive visit to Water Primary School for their annual pumpkin decorating competition. The creativity on display was fantastic, and it was a joy to judge the entries with Deputy Mayor Michelle Smith. We also took time to meet with the Year 6 students to discuss our civic roles. Their curiosity and enthusiasm were inspiring, and I look forward to seeing them grow into future leaders of Rossendale.
