There is a wealth of useful information on the internet on understanding how to look after your old, historical and traditionally built property (anything built before 1945).

Historic England, the historic environment advisor to the Government, has a website full of useful guidance and information.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) also holds a bank of useful information which can help owners maintain and understand their buildings and have a technical advice line to assist owners. They also organise and run training days and events on various topic subjects which owners will find useful in understand technical information and how best to maintain their property.

Owners may also find the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) useful as they have bank of information on maintenance and repairs to Historic buildings/ assets. The IHBC also run several teaching and training courses on various topics which owners may find useful.

If you are looking to improve the energy efficiency of your historic building it is important to first understand how a traditional building works in terms of moisture movement and ventilation, before making any changes. Advice on energy saving in your historic property can be found on the Historic England site.
